EP 603: Kaamna Bhojwani – Intimacy in the Golden Years
In your own journey of self-acceptance and aging, how have your views on intimacy and relationships evolved?
I am on the receiving end of a divorce after eighteen years of marriage. Everything changed. I have two kids. I wondered if I was too old. But I believe in myself and my ability to find love. I strengthened my love for myself. I am not broken or damaged.
Many people fear that aging will negatively affect their romantic life. Based on your experiences and knowledge, what advice would you give to people entering their golden years about maintaining or even enhancing intimacy?
Sexual pleasure is not only through the penis/vagina. This is a patriarchal mindset. Many doctors do not know how to guide people who want a healthy sex life as they age. Find experts and advocate for yourself in the health care system. Lubrication is important. But there is no one size fits all.
Complacency is what gets in the way of healthy relationships. Also victim mentality. If you have a growth mindset, it will help you in your pursuit of a romantic relationship. I challenge myself daily to do something in an effort to celebrate my body and sensuality, like dancing, bathing, and being in nature.
How do you think emotional intimacy changes as we age, and what role does it play in overall happiness during our golden years?
As we grow older, we learn more about emotional intimacy. We learn what turns us on emotionally and physically. We learn what we connect with. Emotional and sex are intertwined. This takes you beyond the superficial.
Why is it important to listen to your body and engage in activities like yoga, acupuncture and intuitive eating?
Staying in touch with your body and helping your body be its best is important as we age. Staying fit is about knowing and respecting our bodies, which helps us teach others how to know and respect their bodies.
Many people think that sex is difficult or non-existent as we get older. How would you challenge these assumptions about intimacy in the golden years?
Sex is vulnerable. If you have the opportunity and courage to talk and think about sex differently, dig up old messages about sex. Who told you that? Are they your values? Approach relationships with honesty and curiosity. Ask people to teach you what they want and do the same to them.
What are your final tips for anyone looking to go on their last first date?
Take the pressure off. Love the journey. If you can see something positive in each person you meet along the way, you’ll enjoy your dating journey and help you meet your ultimate first date. Also, be happy being single.
