Today on Dear Sybersue I discuss the topic: If you want to date more, take off your headphones.
Many men and women complain that they never meet anyone and how difficult dating has become today. One of the biggest problems as to why this happens is because people are so plugged into their smartphones that they rarely look at what’s going on around them. There is so little face-to-face interaction or human connection these days.
Everyone walks around with their heads down looking at their phones and doesn’t look up until they literally bump into someone because they’re not paying attention. I’ve seen people almost get hit by cars while walking and texting on their phones, and I don’t even bother about people texting while driving!
Many companies are now adopting one without a phone politics in their meetings which is great! It forces everyone to pay attention and make eye contact with whoever is speaking. It’s important to feel heard and have mutual boundaries in your work environment. You also want to be respected and feel valued when it comes to your opinion and contributions as a team player.
I can’t even imagine how difficult it must be for the teachers in the classrooms. To be fair, these kids have grown up with a cell phone attached to their thumbs, so they really don’t know anything else or feel there’s something wrong with checking social media regularly. The biggest problem here, of course, is that it can prevent our children from learning to their full potential and understanding the importance of social interaction with others.
This can prevent them from contributing to a social environment and certainly does nothing to boost their self-esteem. If they don’t engage in conversations with others, how do they learn to be interactive and confident throughout their lives? It’s one thing to be active on social media, but another to feel uncomfortable and intimidated when communicating in a social setting.
“Your eyes are the window to your soul.” Looking someone in the eye can tell you so much about them.
You’re missing out on meeting interesting people if you’re always looking down at your phone or plugged into your headphones. Hey, I love my phone as much as the next person, but I know when to put it down and acknowledge my surroundings. Spending an evening with friends should consist of laughter and great conversations. Taking 30 minutes to post pictures of your meal is not proper etiquette and will give you a reputation you might not want to get.
Many men and women have grown tired of online dating and have given up on their pursuit of finding love this way. It’s definitely not for everyone and can become very time consuming. If you want to finally meet yours life partner organically, you should socialize often. Take out your headphones, put down your phone and talk to others when you’re out and about! It also takes some of the nerves out of talking to someone you might be interested in later. The more you practice conversing with others, the more comfortable you will become.
Make eye contact and smile. You don’t have to date everyone you say hello to, but make a habit of being friendly with people you meet. Whether it’s a coffee shop, your local gym, or just passing someone on the street, acknowledging their presence with a smile is a great conversation starter. You may be very surprised with the results! When someone says hello and acknowledges you, doesn’t it make you feel noticed?
Many people start to feel invisible because of what happened to our anti-social behavior and become quite lonely. All you have to do is take public transport one day and look around. 85% of people are connected to some device, completely oblivious to their surroundings. Even looking out the window at what’s going on outside is a better approach to staying somewhat connected.
Don’t let life pass you by because you are too connected to see the wonderful opportunities available to you every day. Be present and embrace your surroundings.
What do you think about this topic? Are you guilty of constantly being on your phone, even when you’re out with friends for the evening? Are social media sites like Instagram addictive to you? I would love to hear your thoughts on this matter. I will always have time to answer you. Please watch the video above and leave your comments below! Thanks.
