Welcome to Day 2 of my unforgettable trip with G Adventures, a day that marked the first official gathering of our live solo vacation group in the heart of Costa Rica. Embracing the spirit of adventure and the joy of new connections, we embarked on a day full of unexpected delights, rich cultural experiences, and the stunning natural beauty that Costa Rica is famous for. As a solo traveler, I found myself in the company of like-minded adventurers, all eager to explore the wonders of this Central American paradise. From the fragrant fields of a coffee plantation to the refreshing waters of La Fortuna’s hot springs, join me as I recount the experiences that made this G Adventures solo vacation a truly remarkable getaway.
Morning Adventure: Mi Cafecito Coffee Tour, Alajuela
As someone who is not a dedicated coffee lover, the prospect of visiting a coffee plantation did not initially spark much excitement in me. However, my experience at Mi Cafecito completely changed my perspective. The tour revealed the intricate journey of coffee beans, distinguishing between the inferior and the sublime – these ripe, fair trade, organically selected gems. This picture might just make you reconsider your regular £5 Starbucks treat, especially when you learn about the role of beetles in the quality of the beans!

Our tour unexpectedly turned into a delectable realm of spirits, with a tasting session of excellent coffee and strong moonshine, complemented by fresh cane syrup made by our team. The friendly competition between us during the cane crushing was a highlight – the battle of the sexes brought plenty of laughs.
The extensive expanses of the plantation, nestled into the steep mountainside, offered us an exciting hike. We encountered an array of wildlife including the spectacular golden orb spider and saw deep canyons that stretch for miles. The rich biodiversity was a true wonder of Costa Rica.
Lunch was a pleasant affair, with traditional Casados - a hearty mix of rice, beans, plantains, salad and a choice of meat or fish. We ate in a quaint, rustic restaurant, surrounded by the peaceful beauty of the plantation.
Tip: When starting this tour, arm yourself with mosquito repellent and bring smaller notes to flip. Also, be sure to purchase some of their fine coffee from the gift shop.
Wildlife Encounters: The white-nosed coat, vultures, bat hawks, golden spiders, sloths and iguanas.

Afternoon treat: Hot Springs at La Fortuna
My expectations for the hot springs at La Fortuna were modest, perhaps envisioning some picturesque, naturally formed pools. What awaited, however, was an extraordinary experience akin to an adult’s playground that exceeded all my expectations.

The thrill of the water slides in total darkness made our hearts beat fast. The variety of pools, alternating between hot and cold, rejuvenated our bodies, while the swim-up bar was the proverbial cherry on top. This evening was a perfect antidote to our long trip to Costa Rica – a wonderful combination of relaxation and excitement. Charismatic Spanish bar attendants and lively DJ beats raised the atmosphere even more.
Relaxing with my friends, cocktail in hand, under the starry sky was the epitome of bliss. This La Fortuna experience was more than just a dip in a hot spring. It was an exciting, refreshing adventure that captured the Costa Rican ‘Pura Vida’ way of life.
