LaToya Zavala, spiritual inner strength coach, helps women release blocks and triggers to free themselves from self-sabotage and become more authentic. You’ll hear all about how she made this transformation herself in this episode Breathe Love & Magic podcast.
Survivor of Domestic Violence
My guest is an amazing woman who has survived domestic violence and is now coaching other women to stand up for themselves. Growing up in Boston, she was in a domestically violent relationship as a young woman that destroyed her faith and left her with nothing.
LaToya pulled herself together and wanted to go to school, but she didn’t have the money. A friend suggested her to get her education in another country where it is less expensive. So, he got a job, saved up and moved to Mexico to study. From there he went on to teach English in Kazakhstan, which was an adventure as you can imagine.
A chaplain in the US Navy
Later, he joined the US Navy and was briefly stationed in Japan. LaToya did a lot to heal herself along the way, both with traditional methods and having a pastoral counselor and other spiritual help.
Having followed this path to survive and thrive, she wanted to help other women do the same from a spiritual perspective. To do this, she earned both her bachelor’s and master’s in divinity.
LaToya worked in a hospital as a chaplain for a time, with people who were suicidal, as well as victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
In the navy, there has been a concerted effort to combat these problems. He knew this would be a great way to help people heal non-clinically, using spiritual tools.
Work in the field of Mental Health
Adding more tools along the way, like Reiki and EFT Tapping. Sometimes she works alone with clients, or in conjunction with clinical psychologists, and often after the client’s treatment has been completed.
One of her greatest joys was helping women through these traumatic situations and being a part of their healing journey.
A powerful motivational speaker
I also asked LaToya about her motivational speaking and the spiritual angle she incorporates. He said that this country understands more how spirituality is a part of everything. We are mind, body and spirit.
The idea of love, forgiveness and acceptance are spiritual concepts as is the energy that drives and defines who we are as a human race and people. Reconnecting with the energy of healing and transformation is also spiritual.
It focuses on personal trauma, but also on the collective trauma of women within us. If you experience self-sabotaging behaviors, think about the energy behind it. What story are you telling yourself?

It is time to let go of this identity, belief and projection that you have been given. This is not your authentic self. The truth is that people are born with drive and positive self-belief organically from birth.
Learning to walk, fall and get back up is a perfect example. But somehow, somewhere, things changed and women start doubting themselves. This is not the case with most men.
Disempowering beliefs are not yours
It is a revelation to realize that these disempowering beliefs are not yours. Their release changes everything. She works hard to help women release these adopted blocks that are not real, but are learned and part of the collective consciousness.
When you combine cultural, social, religious conditions and oppression that has existed for millennia, this is really a kind of psychological abuse of female identity. This is where self-sabotage, indecisiveness and low self-esteem come from. It has been learned for thousands of years.
For example, indecisiveness is a symptom of trauma and not trusting yourself. Ask yourself why you don’t trust yourself and find out what it is about you.
Redefining words like confidence and pride
LaToya shared several common words that have amazing definitions. Its true meaning self confidence it is the self-confidence that arises from your appreciation of your qualities and abilities.
Do you value yourself? Where did you get the idea that it’s bad to brag about yourself? It’s not in your DNA. Women have been taught and forced to hold us down and back.
Here is another interesting word – pride. The definition of pride is being able to celebrate your accomplishments. What’s wrong with that? Nothing! However, there is a pervasive attitude about women being braggarts and needing to be more humble. They don’t tell men that!
Its definition humble is to have a low estimate of one’s importance. Why is this good? Who inundated women with this idea? Let’s think about the energy of this.
I am the Storm
One of LaToya’s speeches is titled, “I Am the Storm.” She gave this speech at a DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) gathering. While storms do damage, they also help to clear what needs to be cleared.
The beliefs, policies, practices and laws that have kept women down for generations will not change with a gentle wind. It would take a huge storm to knock all of that down.
LaToya says you can be the storm that shifts, clears, and tears down what needs to change.
Think of the eye of the storm – a place where there is peace and calm. This is where you connect with your beliefs, purpose and mission. That center and core is where you can dwell and your behavior and passion are those winds that swirl around you.
A storm is just chaotic energy until it is organized and unified. So, like the storm, allow that passion, purpose, and true self to organize who you are and what you stand for. Then you organize yourself to be the storm that can make the changes.
You have been through many storms, but now is the time to get to the center of the storm and become the storm you are meant to be. Then women can work to make this change together!
There’s a lot more that LaToya and I talked about that were so inspiring that you’ll hear when you listen to the podcast.
