If you are planning a trip to Bacalar and doing some research on things to do beforehand, you will almost certainly have come across the famous Bacalar Lagoon, also called the 7 Colors Lagoon, famous for its vibrant waters. But have you heard of Los Rapidos Bacalar?
You may be less familiar with a particular part of the lagoon. Most of Laguna Bacalar is a large lake, but it narrows at Los Rapidos and the shallow, crystalline channel gives way to unique stromatolites.

Stromatolites are formed from layers of sediment in water, creating unique rock formations. These stromatolites they’re not just dead rock. They act as filters for the water and are a critical part of the lagoon ecosystem. Look out for signs indicating the areas where you cannot walk or stand.
The channel feeds directly into the main lagoon and the rapids are not really that fast. Instead, it’s like a real-life lazy river like you’d find at a water park.

Information Los Rapidos
Los Rapidos is a natural narrow point in the lake system where the current flows between bodies of water.
You can enjoy Los Rapidos by visiting the private “beach club” with a small entrance. This is really the only way to see this unique feature of the lagoon.
Los Rapidos is about half a mile from the main entry office. You can float and swim, but be warned that the current moves relatively quickly, so it’s not always possible to hang in place. To return to the entry area you will have to swim or paddle against the tide.
Los Rapidos Bacalar Hours
Los Rapidos is open every day of the week from 10am to 6pm.
Entrance fees to Los Rapidos
Admission to Los Rapidos is $150 pesos for adults and $100 pesos for children 2-10. If you ask us, it’s a small price to pay for such an amazing experience in some of the clearest waters in the world.
Credit cards are accepted, but a weak cell phone signal can sometimes affect whether the card terminals work. Have cash with you, just in case. We used our card on our last visit and had no problems.
Life jackets are available for an additional fee. The water is quite shallow, but since it can move quickly, it’s a good idea to have a life jacket just in case.

Activities in Los Rapidos in Bacalar Lagoon
There is much more to do here than swimming or walking. Take a kayak out on the water, gliding through the crystal surface and paddling downstream. Kayaks cost $200-400 pesos for a full hour. There are also hammocks hanging from trees right in the water so you can float a few inches above the water and relax while watching others frolic.
If you want to take a look at the underwater life, be sure to bring snorkeling equipment. With such clear and shallow waters, it is the perfect place for snorkeling.
If you spend a few days in Bacalar or just a day visiting Los Rapidos is a must, since of course you do a Bacalar tour. You could spend the whole day here or just an hour, it really depends on how much time you have.
Where is Bacalar Los Rapidos?
Bacalar Rapids is a narrow channel to the southern end of the lagoon, about a fifteen minute drive from Bacalar town. You could also cycle (13 km), just be aware that the roads can get a bit dusty. Or, if you are coming from Chetumal, it will be about an hour drive.
You can easily take a taxi from Bacalar to Los Rapidos. The road is dirt but very good for your typical cheap rental car. Obviously, avoid potholes and go slow.

Amenities in Los Rapidos
A rustic outdoor restaurant is on site. Located right by the water, the large grassy area is so close to the water that you can watch swimmers float by while enjoying Caribbean-style food, as well as traditional Mexican food like ceviche and tacos. Finish with a cold Mexican beer or fresh coconut milk.
The restaurant has bathrooms and showers. Be warned there are no lockers here. If you have come with a tour group or rented a car, the safest thing to do is to leave your belongings in the vehicle. There is a parking attendant who looks after the cars and helps you park.
